May 5,, 1843 issue w front page woodcut illustrated satire on card players, "The Whist Party" , also inside page illus article, claiming to be a Sermon or "Popular Discourse Delivered by Pompey Alexander Smash", in minstrel show accent, also music for "Miss Luck Long" in black minstrel dialogue, & ads by "Dr Peters", claiming for cures for Venereal Diseases. Wear at edges, folds, good overall.

A nice early American militia officer's belt with eagle beltplate, this 1840s era sword belt is black leather with brass loops for hangers (no hanger straps present) and a lovely 2-pc tongue & wreath plate, with raised wing American eagle and 13 stars, applied die-struck tongue disk, oak leaf wreath , similar to M1840 Ames sword-belt plate ( see O'Donnell Plate 287) but with plain belt loops. Leather belt w average wear.
A very rare and nice early American United States Revenue Cutter Service sword belt with upright eagle on the tongue of this cast brass tongue & wreath plate, with integral cast tongue, and original brown leather swordbelt with sword hanger straps. The belt leather is sound and flexible, one of the hanger straps has 2 chew marks exposing the inner linen fabric. (The beltplate is similar to O'Donnell Plate 1012) The Revenue Cutter Service became part of the United States Coast Guard; this belt & plate probably date from 1865 to 1870s.
Civil War CDV photo, full standing view of a young solder holding his forage cap, the crown with nice detail of the infantry bugle insignia, and regimental numerals "%# H, also a private purchase state pin rarely seen in photos but often excavated on Western battlefields. I believe the solder is a member of the 53rd Illinois Infantry which was in St Louis, Missouri briefly. Reverse w imprint "E. Revolutionary War Soldier's pay certificate issued by the State of Connecticut, "Connecticut Line, Continental Army" issued June 1, 1782, w ornate border, mkd "For The Payment Of The Connecticut Line Unto Daniel Thornton who hath served in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army being one forth part of the balance due to him, which sum shall be paid to him in Gold or Silver". Issued at Hartford, Ct & sgd by Treasurer John Lawrence. 8 x 5" ptd/ink, w cancellation hole indicating the soldier has been paid in full. Thornton, an illiterate soldier signed the certificate on the reverse with "x" alongside his name and was from East Haddam, Connecticut. Rev w archive repair. Vg.

Civil War Confederate veteran James H Thompson served as a courier for General Jeb Stuart. Confederate Cross of Honor Application, January, 1904, Baltimore, Maryland, listing his service as "Private, Co D, 6th Virginia Cavalry", states he was honorably discharged, April 9, 1865, signed "Jas. H Thompson", also signed by UCV Camp Commander FA Zimmerman and Maryland CS veteran notable Wm L. Ritter. Edge trimmed, overall VG w service info. 1p 8 x 11" ptd/ink, w stamped seal of the Confederate Veteran's Army & Navy Society. Vg
A very wicked looking French Infantry rifle bayonet with blade edge handsomely engraved "Mfre d' Armes de' St Etienne D'bre 1880 " . Brass pommel, w walnut grips and locking spring works. The curved guard has ordnance inspecter markings and is serial numbered.The blade is exc, bright. The blade is 20.5", bayonet is 25" overall. A great den decorator! With original steel scabbard. Vg.

Civil War author George Livermore, wrote a history of the Founding Fathers views on slavery & Negro citizenship, which greatly influenced Abraham Lincoln- when Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, he gave the ink pen to Livermore. April 17,1862 letter from Livermore at Boston to son Willie, a West Point Cadet re son's demerits, import of soldierly bearing, good cadet habits, critques his ragged clothes, untidy shoes etc, & reiterates his love for his son. 4pp ink letter, signed "Yr Aff Father, GL" (Willie Livermore became a career US Army officer and is remembered as father of the American Army War Game). Vg.
An historic 1864 Richmond campaign field imprint issued at HQ Army of the Potomac, June 27, 1864, by General George Meade responding to reports that soldiers are committing lawless and disgraceful acts, and publishes the War Department orders prohibiting pillage- any acts committed by an officer or soldier entering private homes for plunder are punishable by death. 2pp 8 x 5" ptd. Vg. This order was printed on a field press following the Battle of Cold Harbor.

An original 1842 large family Bible, illustrated with woodcuts, and published at Hartford, Connecticut by Willliam Andrus. The approx 11 x 10 x 3" leather bound Bible is complete with an index and still has a very old embroidered bookmark. The covers are worn, the binding has archival repairs, is in fair condition overall. Shipping weight 7 lbs.
