A fascinating original order for 19th US Infantry deserter James Garvey to be Branded with the letter "D" 1 1/2" long on his hip, & to serve 2 years Hard Labor , wearing a 12 pound ball & 4 foot chain. 1p 8 x 10 ptd/ink sgd by Hugh Gibson brown as ADC to General Ord. VG, w US Army HQ, San Francisco overstamp, dated 1871. Captain Hugh Gibson Brown of Keosauqua , Iowa was a noted Frontier officer, Kiowa Indnan Agent & brevetted veteran of the Cicil War Vicksburg & Fort Harrison Battles, comes w Brown's service info.

General & Special Orders were issued to communicate commands and information to the Army. Each order, issued in writing by a command, was then printed for distribution to each unit, either at an army department headquarter or by commanders at local headquarters, sometimes in the field on portable printing presses.
