In 1862 Kelsey S Marlin, a Barclay, Iowa Frontier physician who had enlisted in the 5th Iowa Infantry as a sergeant was promoted to Army Surgeon; the confusion that ensued caused him to be charged as a deserter. A letter from Captain Daniel Lee, (Independence Iowa native) 5th Iowa to Colonel CL Mathies, 5th Iowa Commander , July 17, 1862, Clear Creek, Miss, unraveling the mix-up, cites Kelsey's return to Mississippi after serving as Surgeon Worthington's Regiment, Jefferson City, Missouri Army Hospital, then as Surgeon, McClurg's Missouri County Battalion, requesting he be restored to duty without trial for desertion and be paid. 2pp 8 x 14" ink. Comes w service info for Dr Marlin & Captain Lee. Very Good. Thanks for visiting Mike Brackin Civil War Antiques.
