Robert Lucas was a Colonel in the American Army who later became the First Governor of the Iowa Territory. 1840 ink als letter from Lucas, at Burlington, to General Jones recommending a man for appointment to the post of deputy surveyor. The letter is a stampless cover, complete with Burlington, I.T." cancellation and addressed to General George Jones, Surveyor General, Dubuque, Iowa. A nice early Territorial cancelled letter. 8 x 11" ink. |
