In 1862 the US Army organized it's own Fire Brigade to protect the City of Washington. It was the only professional Fire Company in Washington & only Steam Brigade at the tragic Smithsonian Institute fire of January, 1865. April 10, 1866 letter from Chief Engineer William Dicksen, w "US Steam Fire Brigade" logo, "Chief Engineer's Office, Pennsylvania Avenue, below 19th Street Washington, DC", to Fire Captain James Byrnes, re intentto meet with the President, currently "devoting his time national matters; the House has introduced a resolution of thanks to the Company, also mentions Johnny Orr was accidentally shotat the Arsenal Fire Friday. 1p 8 x 11 ink.
