an historic early Iowa immigrant trunk from the Huber/Gaertner families of Winnesheik County Iowa- a rugged late 18th century dove-tail pine domed trunk, the handles, straps and lock plate are hand wrought iron; the latter, a stylized 2-headed eagle, perhaps a Russian symbol. The Huber family came to Iowa in 1850 the party elder, Johnannes Gaertner survived Napoloeon's Moscow campaign- his sons built a church in thanksgiving at Old Mission, near Fort Atkinson , Iowa. The State of Iowa erected a plaque honoring him. Worn but solid, and 80% of the lamp black finish remains. 34 x 19 x 18". |
