Manufacturer: NA

An original US Army Indian Wars Order, issued at HQ Dept of California, San Francisco, September 19, 1871 announces that US Cavalry Private John Jones, 8th US Cavalry, aka John Cary, formerly of the 14th US Infantry, sentenced to 3 years hard labor & to wear "a ball weighing 12 pounds attached to his leg by a chain 3 feet long", is restored to his unit, on recommendation of his commanding officer who cites his good conduct, by command of General Ord. 1p 8 x 11" ptd/ink, sgd by Lt Hugh Brown, 12th Infantry. With stamped docket by Captain GC Smith, San Francisco, Sept 22, 1871. VG.
General & Special Orders were issued to communicate commands and information to the Army. Each order, issued in writing by a command, was then printed for distribution to each unit, either at an army department headquarter or by commanders at local headquarters, sometimes in the field on portable printing presses. The orders were then issued to regiments, often to be read aloud to the troops.
General & Special Orders were printed as issued with date & location; at the end of a year the regimental adjutant might retain them loose or simply string bind them by punching holes and stringing on " red cloth string tape (the source of the old expression "government red tape"). Sometimes an officer or HQ clerk might take a group of orders to a local print shop or bookbinder and have an accumulation bound with leather or cloth covers.
