GENERAL JOHN SEDGWICK a rare order issued by Major General John Sedgwick as commander of the Army of Potomac. ink mss Special Order, Feb 10, 1864, announces troops may only discharge loaded small arms from 10-12 noon, w details- Sedgiwck issued this order to prevent panics caused by soldiers randomly emptying their muskets. 1p, ink sgd by Lt JB Chase, aaag, at HQ 1st brig, 2nd Div, 3rd Corp, Feb 11, 1864. Sedgwick was offered Command of the Army of the Potomac in 1863 but declined; beloved by his troops, he was killed by a sniper at Spottsylvania, May, 1864. 8 x 11"

The photo imprint is for JA Leach, Indianola, Iowa, & bears a cancelled US Revenue Stamp, dating this image to 1864-1865. This may be a posthumous image by the Indianola photogrpaher; I can't find any info naming a Warren County Iowan killed at Gettysburg so presume, if the inscription is correct, he was serving with another state unit. VG.
