Photo is by Campbell & Ecker, Louisville, Kentucky, and reverse also bears a US revenue stamp. the photo comes w service info- Pvt Cumming, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, served 3 years with the 31st Iowa, a notable combat unit.

When the ladies of New Orleans showed disrespect to the Yankee Occupiers, General Butler issued the infamous May 15, 1862 "Woman Order",# 28, that any woman who shows comtempt for Union soldiers shall be 'treated as a woman of the town plying her avocation",creating such furor that Jefferson Davis placed a bounty on the head of the General, hereafter known as "The Beast". An Original May 15, 1862 issue of the New Orleans True Delta newspaper, 2pp, ptd on brown paper, w top front page printing of order # 28, and just below, Butler's Order #27 prohibiting NO Churches from observing Davis's Prayer Proclamation . 2pp complete, Vg

CIVIL WAR OHIO IDD SURGEON'S TOURNIQUET the classic Civil War surgeon's amputation tourniquet, with heavy brass screw frame and buckle and linen strap. Unmarked except for numerals "19" on adjusting screw. This belonged to Doctor James Brackin of Warren, Ohio. (See identical example in surgeon's case, page 7, Dammann, "Pictorial Encyclopedia of Civil War Medical Instruments and Equipment".)

CALIFORNIA CIVIL WAR BADGE a handsome reversible veteran mourning badge worn by a Hanford, California Civil War veteran- 2-pc celluloid /brass badge w color illus GAR star medals, w white pendant ribbon, on 7" red/white/blue ribbon, w silver tassels, mkd "McPherson Post, No. 51 G.A.R. Hanford, Cal.". The ribbon is reversible, reverse is a black mourning ribbon w silver lettering & large illus of GAR star medal. McPherson Post was established in Hanford, King's County, California, 1883. The badge dates to circa 1890s. The front ribbon is missing the small applied US flags, white pendant ribbon is frayed, the main & reverse ribbons are vg.

VERMONT OFFICER A handsome Civil War image- a large chestview of a young Union officer w eagle infantry coat buttons and wearing his rank straps. The 8 x 10" image is mounted in its original Civil War era gilt wood frame, reverse w wood backing. The inside of the frame contains a 2nd image- a circa 1870s photo of a family, with an empty chair, in front of their wood frame home, w imprints by the photographer, AM Slocum, Northern Survey Co, Montpelier, Vermont. The Survey Co, Albany, NY made images & illus for atlases, and the photo also bears their logo on front mat. The home photo revrse is pencil inscr "D Hassett". Both images vg overall, w age spots.

ARMED UNION SOLDIER a classic Civil War tinytpe 3/4 view photo of a Union soldier standing with bayonet fitted musket at his side. He wears a frock coat, forage cap, cap box and gilt decorated oval & shoulder belt plates. The image is in gilt mat & full case; it came from the Northwood, New Hampshire area and measures approx 3.3 x 2.7". The image is clear but slightly dark and the tintype has a very shallow crease in upper margin not affecting the soldier. Case worn, scuffed.
