W service info- the 15th served as Infantry, had exc combat service, and was in the Carolinas at War's End.

FLORIDA STEAMER MAPLE LEAF The US Steamer Maple Leaf is a noted shipwreck, sunk April 1864 by a Confederate mine in the St John's River, Florida. Union Army General Order, HQ Hilton Head, SC, Feb 24, 1864, charging 6 Irish soldiers of the 24th Massachusetts w pilfering lager beer while unloading the steamer at St Augustine, Florida, Dec 10, 1863, and w getting drunk and threatening various individuals. The order includes details of the misdeeds, & sentencing. , issued a nmonth befoire the ship was sunk. 4pp ptd, 8 x 5". Vg

CIVIL WAR ICE SKATES An unusual early American pair of skates- wood frame skates w steel blades, & steel screw device to attach to soles of the shoe or boot. Approx 17" long, missing the leather straps. The blade is maker stamped "JL Whelpley Best Make". Blades exc, wood frame w original red paint, much faded, and one skate has a period copper wire repair. W info re James Whelpley, the pioneer Canadian speed skate inventor.
