GOLD SCALES EARLY AMERICAN POCKET SCALES An original set of pocket scales as used for weighing coins, gold, and apothecary items. The 2 brass pans and balance have the original green cotton strings, and dark green leather covered wood case, the later with embossed image of an American eagle and shield. The case is approx 7 x 3 x 1". The case is fair with hinge repaired and wear on leather & the inside cloth lining. There is a compartment for the weights which are missing.

DONNER PARTY SIERRA NEVADA VILLIAN AUTOGRAPH US NAVY Selim E Woodworth, a US Navy officer, was placed in charge of the relief expeditions from Sutter's Fort to rescue the Donner Party survivors in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Truckee Lake (Donner Pass), 1846, but despite the heroism of individual expedition members in attempting to rescue the "Forlorn Hope" survivors, Woodworth, fearing the Winter snows, repeatedly delayed the rescue efforts. An original US Navy pay check, issued to Woodworth at the US Navy Yard, New York, August, 1844, and signed on front "S.E. Woodworth", 2 years before the Donner Party Expedition, the most famous episode f group cannibalism in American History. A rare autograph. 8 x 3" blue paper, ptd/ink, VG.
