Click for more detail...

12330

CHARLES GATEWOOD GERONIMO APACHE WAR OFFICER US ARMY ORDER Charles Gatewood was the young cavalry officer who befriended & escorted Geronimo to captivity, the subject of the TNT movie "Geronimo". An original August 27, 1892 US Army HQ Special Order, Washington, DC, reassigns various men & officers and orders Lt Charles B Gatewood, 6th US Cavalry to report to Fort Custer, Montana to be examined for his fitness for promotion, by order of Major General John Schofield. Gatewood was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor but never credited by his jealous superiors for convincing Geronimo to surrender. 2pp 9 x 12" ptd with ink notation. 2 punch holes on left margin, overall VG.

General & Special Orders were issued to communicate commands and information to the US Army. Each order, issued in writing by a command, was then printed for distribution to each unit, either at an army department headquarter or by commanders at local headquarters, sometimes in the field on portable printing presses. The orders were then issued to regiments, often to be read aloud to the troops.

General Orders were printed as issued with date & location; at the end of a year the regimental adjutant might retain them loose or simply string bind them by punching holes and stringing on ľ" red cloth string tape (the source of the old expression "government red tape"). Sometimes an officer or HQ clerk might take a group of orders to a local print shop or bookbinder and have an accumulation bound with leather or cloth covers.
